Figure Tricks & Tips

Here are some of my favorite tricks and tips in my painting arsenal, the ones that I repeatedly turn to in order to ensure that the body I paint ends up looking like it belongs to an actual human being.

Proportion: Accurate proportions are key to painting a good figure because, having looked at human bodies our entire life, we innately know when proportions are off. Look at some Game of Thrones or Friends fan art, and if it is bad, I guarantee that it is bad because the arms are too short, the shoulders too wide, or the femurs too long. Of course, your first job is always to carefully observe the figure you are drawing, but there are some measurement tricks and hacks you can use after you have sketched out your figure, just to confirm it is proportionate.
